Why We Named It Salted Soul

A cross made of stones resting on a rock at the beach with the ocean behind on the Charleston coast

People ask us about the name a lot. Usually it's at a market table or in the comments — "Salted Soul… is that a surf thing?" And honestly, part of it is. We live where the air tastes a little like the ocean and your car door is always gritty with sand. Salt is just in the water here.

But that's not really where the name started. It started with a verse we couldn't shake.

"You are the salt of the earth"

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus is talking to ordinary people — fishermen, farmers, folks who had never given a speech in their lives — and he tells them, "You are the salt of the earth." Not you should try to be. You are.

It's easy to skim past that today, because most of us only use salt to make fries taste better. But back then salt did real work. It preserved food that would otherwise rot. It brought out flavor that was already there. It was valuable enough that people were sometimes paid in it. When Jesus handed that word to a crowd of nobodies, he was telling them their lives mattered more than they thought — that they were meant to preserve what's good, bring out flavor in a bland world, and be worth something to the people around them.

That wrecked us a little. In a good way.

Salt was never meant to stay in the shaker

Here's the thing about salt: it only does anything when it gets out and touches something. Sitting in the shaker, it's useless. On the food, it changes everything.

We think faith works the same way. It was never meant to stay tucked away for Sunday mornings and private prayers. It's meant to get out — into your workplace, your group chat, the line at the coffee shop, the beach on a Saturday. Not loud. Not obnoxious. Just present enough to make a difference in the room.

Paul says something similar in Colossians 4:6: "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt." Grace first, always. But seasoned — with just enough of who you are that people get a little curious. Good salt doesn't beat you over the head. It just makes you thirsty.

Why "Soul"

The "soul" half is the personal part. This isn't a costume you put on. It's not a brand identity you wear to look a certain way. It's who you actually are underneath — the part of you that God made and calls His own.

So when we put those two words together, Salted Soul became a picture of the kind of life we're after: someone whose faith isn't hidden or preachy, but woven into how they live — adding flavor, preserving what's good, and quietly making the people around them thirsty for the hope they carry.

What that has to do with a hat

We know — it's a hat. We're not pretending a piece of embroidered cotton is going to change the world.

But we've watched it start conversations. Someone notices the little cross in the logo. They ask about it. And a normal Tuesday turns into a real moment, just because someone was wearing what they believe instead of keeping it to themselves. That's the whole idea. We make things you'd actually wear, that carry a little salt into the rooms you walk into.

That's why we named it Salted Soul. Not because it sounded coastal — though it does. Because we couldn't stop thinking about what it would look like if a bunch of ordinary people actually believed they were the salt of the earth, and started living like it.

Grab a hat, get out of the shaker, and go be a little salty. Here's the lineup.

Wear the message. Start the conversation.
